EV war; Tesla Model Y vs. Kia EV6

Choosing electric vehicles is challenging. They’re a newer technology, meaning that we still don’t know how some of them hold up over time. Even so, more than 52% of car buyers globally are now interested in purchasing electric vehicles, and the number is only getting higher. There is no proper statistics for Australian market but should be global standard if not higher

If you’re interested in purchasing an electric vehicle, you have plenty of options, depending on your budget. However, in 2022, two models stand out above all others. Let’s compare the Kia EV6 and the Tesla Model Y

Kia EV6

Kia is one of the newest players to enter the EV market, making big waves when it announced the release of the new EV6. So far, it’s performed admirably in terms of sales. Let’s talk about how the 2022 Kia EV performs in real life.

Kia EV6 Battery Specs

The new Kia EV6 is performing admirably in the world of electric vehicles, especially for its range. Using a nickel-cobalt-manganese battery, this stylish and small SUV can run for 232 to 310 miles on one charge with the battery only. Depending on the model you purchase, your battery could be between 58 kWh and 77.4 kWh, respectively.

If you want to take a road trip in your EV, you’ll also need to plan out your charging. With a 110V charger, it could take between 51 to 68 hours to fully charge. However, with a 220V charger, you can expect a charging time of 6.3 to 8.7 hours, and 1.05 to 1.22 hours at 440V.

Kia EV6 Performance

The EV6 has received stellar ratings from the major auto review magazines and websites, but does it actually live up to these ratings?

With 167 to 320 horsepower, this EV can go from 0 to 60 in only 5.1 seconds, topping out at 117 mph. In terms of safety, the Kia EV6 scored 90% for adult safety and 86% for child security, both of which are higher than the average for other vehicles.

Of course, that isn’t why people purchase a compact SUV. For cargo space, you will have 7.43m³ or 15.3m³ including the seating area. The ratio of range, power, and cargo space for such a small vehicle is hard to match, so how much does it cost?

Kia EV6 Price

For the admirable performance of these vehicles, the RRP of a Kia EV6 is $67,990 AUD before on road cost, making it one of the most affordable options for new EVs with this level of performance. Of course, that still isn’t pocket change, but with the soaring costs of all new vehicles, this isn’t out of the normal range at all.

Believe it or not, $67,990 is still less than the overall average of new vehicles in 2022. Prices around the globe are skyrocketing for both gas and electric vehicles. Fortunately, financing an electric vehicle is easier than ever with the right personal car loans.

Tesla Model Y

Teslas are, by all definitions, luxury vehicles. The Kia EV6 is certainly more luxurious than many other models on the market, but the Tesla Model Y has been a model for many other luxury vehicles in recent years by companies including Lucid, Rivian, NIO, BYD and many more.

Unlike Kia, Tesla has been in the EV game for a decade now, and the Model Y was introduced in 2019 as a compact SUV with an entirely new and unique style. Here’s what you need to know before buying one for yourself!

Tesla Model Y Battery Specs

The Model Y uses a 75 kWh 350 V lithium-ion battery, which should maintain its original capacity for up to ten years even with regular use. Using a standard 220V charger, you can expect to fully charge your Model Y in around 10 hours. With a fast charger, you can bring your battery from 9% to 90% in as little as 40 minutes and up to 97% in 50 minutes.

If you’re in a hurry, you can bring the battery from 9% to 50% in under 12 minutes, making these batteries some of the fastest-charging EV batteries on the market. With a full charge, you should receive between 303 and 330 miles with the battery only, even with a curb weight of 2,066kg.

Tesla Model Y Performance

Like the EV6, the Tesla Model Y has received excellent ratings from most major car-rating outlets. For the standard version of this vehicle, you should expect 275 horsepower, allowing you to accelerate from 0 to 60 in 3.5 to 4.8 seconds, making it one of the fastest compact SUVs in history.

For safety, the Tesla Model Y received a 5-star rating , making it one of the safest vehicles on the market for both adults and children.

Now, let’s compare Kia EV6 vs Tesla Model Y dimensions. For cargo space, the Model Y offers 9.2m³ and 23.2m³ including the back seats. Overall, that is significantly more cargo volume if you need the vehicle for transporting goods or if you have a family.

Tesla Model Y Price

They don’t give these away, with the MSRP for the 2022 Model Y starting at $72,300 AUD before on road cost. With the rising costs of vehicles and shipping, you can expect to pay more than this in future.

However, the Model Y is clearly a great vehicle with a lot to offer. If you are in the market for a luxury vehicle that can save you money on fuel, reduce your carbon emissions, and offer a unique style, then this is an excellent option. Also, with the right car loan, you shouldn’t have a problem paying for the Model Y.

Now that you know the difference between these two EVs, you can make an informed decision as to which is right for you.

For the price, the Kia EV6 performs quite similarly to the Tesla Model Y, making it a better option for your budget. However, for extra cargo space, a longer range, and Tesla-quality luxury, the Model Y is the better option. Neither model is a bad electric vehicle, so choose based on your budget and preferences.
